Checkboxes & conditional fields

A checkbox field is a simple opt-in the customer can tick — “Add an engraving”, “Include a personal note”. Its state is transmitted with the order like any other field.

The gift box option is a special, stock-aware kind of checkbox configured separately.

Any field can be set to appear only when a given checkbox is ticked. The classic pattern:

  1. Add a checkbox field “Add an engraving”.
  2. Add a text field “Your text”, set to show only if that checkbox is checked.

Behavior details worth knowing:

  • A hidden field loses its required constraint — a customer who leaves the checkbox unticked is never blocked by a field they can’t see.
  • Hidden fields transmit nothing to the order.
  • When the checkbox is ticked, the field appears instantly and the live preview picks it up as usual.

When the surcharge trigger is set to “when any field is filled”, a ticked checkbox counts as filled — which is usually what you want with the “Add an engraving” pattern, since ticking the box is precisely the opt-in to the paid option. See Engraving surcharge.
