Engraving surcharge

The surcharge lets you charge a fixed amount for personalization. It’s optional per product — free engraving is a perfectly supported setup.

In the product’s configuration:

Option Detail
Amount Fixed fee in your shop currency.
Trigger When any field is filled (default — customers who skip personalization pay nothing) or Always (every purchase of this product includes the fee).

When a personalized product is added to cart, a Shopify Function (Cart Transform) expands the line into an inseparable bundle: product + engraving fee (+ gift box if selected). In practice:

  • The cart shows the product with its personalization properties and the fee as part of the bundle — the customer cannot delete the fee line while keeping the engraving.
  • Quantities stay consistent: ordering 3 engraved items bills 3 fees, automatically.
  • Multi-currency stores work natively — Shopify converts the fee’s price like any variant price.
  • The expansion happens server-side at cart level: it holds even with JavaScript disabled and with accelerated checkout paths, as long as the personalization is attached to the line.
  • Works on every Shopify plan — the function uses only capabilities available to all stores, and the app never touches your checkout.
  • A sale is never blocked: if the function were ever unavailable, checkout proceeds without the transformation rather than failing the purchase, and the order still carries a trace for reconciliation (see Order line properties).

To carry the fee’s price, the app maintains a hidden product in your catalog (published to the Online Store channel but excluded from search, collections and recommendations), with one variant per fee amount. The app creates and repairs it automatically — if you delete it by accident, it’s recreated on the next save. You never need to manage it.

On product pages where personalization matters, the express buttons (Shop Pay, etc. that skip the cart) are hidden: they would bypass the personalization form and its validation. The standard Add to cart flow — where the customer sees the preview and the fee — is preserved. Customers can still use accelerated payment at checkout.

Leave the surcharge disabled: fields, preview, fonts and order transmission all work identically; there’s simply no fee line and no bundle expansion.
